Joint-Enrollment
Study-Abroad Exchange Program in Toulouse, France

2011

The 2004 American group and Dr. Mann on their last day at Toulouse's Lycée Montalembert - Lespinet. It's June 24, and we're ready to depart for Paris tomorrow on the TGV!

This is the official logo of the summer 2004 trip, in colored pencil, designed by Danielle Berry. We are always interested in updating our logo with new student designs!

The Department of Modern Languages at North Georgia College & State University sponsors a summer study-abroad program in collaboration with Ms. Deborah Riedmiller, former Foreign Language Coordinator for the Atlanta Public Schools, former AP and IB French teacher, and co-founder of the Georgia A.A.T.F. French Immersion Camp. Ms. Riedmiller began the program in 1985, and the program has been sponsored by the NGCSU since 1993.  Dr. Mann is Head of the Department of Modern Languages and Professor of French & Spanish  at NGCSU and began working with the program in the fall of 1999.

Our program is unique in that it is offers full-time intensive academic study, joint-enrollment credit, a home-stay, and a student exchange.  There is no other program like it in the country.  Students who have had two or more years of high-school French and meet NGCSU joint-enrollment requirements receive between six and nine semester hours of college credit at the elementary and/or intermediate levels, and depending on their home institution additional high school credit in French. The requirements for college credit include SAT or ACT scores and a G.P.A. sufficient for admission to NGCSU. Those who are not accepted for NGCSU credit can still participate in the program and, if their high school offers it for summer programs, they still receive their high school credit.  Everyone participates in the experience of a lifetime!

The American students spend most of June in Toulouse and are hosted by French families. They attend class five to six hours a day at the Lycée Montalembert, and are normally taught by NGCSU faculty, Ms. Riedmiller, and sometimes another American teacher. They will also get to know native French instructors from the lycée, and often have the opportunity to visit other classes to see how French kids learn as well as host French kids in the classes they are taking. The program also includes excursions in the surrounding area, including trips to such attractions as Carcassonne, Albi, a Cathar castle, Andorra, the Basque Country, or other sites of interest. Some of these excursions are official program functions with French and American teachers and host family members in attendance, while others may occur with students' individual host families.

To fulfill the exchange, the American students host a French student (usually the one with whom they stay in Toulouse). Depending on the year and the situation, this takes place either upon their return to the U.S. for about three weeks in July, or in the spring for about two weeks to correspond with the French 2-week spring vacation period. In 2009, the French students were in Atlanta from March 27th to April 15th. Plans for an exchange visit for 2011 are still tentative, but are under discussion.

For 2011, the projected program cost for tuition, fees, and expenses will be $3,495.00,* which includes everything except the college application fee ($30.00), fees for travel documentation (passport, etc.), personal spending money, and transportation to and from the Atlanta airport. All the details are discussed at the organizational and orientation meetings, which begin in the fall and continue until May.

*The projected program cost assumes participation by enough students to qualify for a group travel rate, as well as relatively stable exchange rates, airline ticket & ground transportation prices, etc. The program directors reserve the right to adjust the program cost in response to these exigencies should the need arise.
