Fishes

Fish are aquatic vertebrates that possess gills for breathing and fins for swimming. Fish are ectotherms that allow their body temperature to fluctuate with the surrounding water temperature.

 


Bluegill
Lepomis macrochirus
Freshwater fish that is sometimes called bream. Popular game fish. Eat small fish and invertebrates. Schools in groups of 20-30.

Largemouth Bass
Micropterus salmoides
State fish of Georgia. Freshwater. Eats mostly smaller fish, but also frogs, snakes, salamanders, small water birds, insects. Popular game fish. Can live 16 years and grow to over 2' in length and weigh over 20 lbs.

Mosquitofish
Gambusia affinis

 Eat mosquito larvae, beetles, mayflies, and other invertebrates. Sometimes called gambusia. May be the most widespread freshwater fish in the world in that it has been introduced into many countries for mosquito control. Lifespan 2-3 yrs.
