Meet in Lab

Wed. - Nesbitt 5100
Thurs - NOC 109

Coverage:  Syllabus and
Data & Statistics in Today's World

Read Chapter 1 paying close attention to Section 1.2.   As you do, think about 1) what would constitute "good" data, 2) the different types of data, and 3) different ways that data can be used.  Come to class with questions related to these three issues.  Since this is a second course in Statistics, think about how the information in this chapter ties to what you did in your first course in Statistics.

Skim Chapter 24 (omitting section 7) thinking about how this material ties to Chapter 1, to the Gallup article, and to the videos. (Both chapters are available in the custom book or through MyStatLab).  As you go through this chapter, recognize the role that statistics plays in one of the fastest growing directions for businesses.  Pay special attention to Figure 24.4 on page 841.  Although this is labelled as the Data Mining process, this cycle has application in any applied statistics setting.

REMINDER:  Your first MyStatLab Homework (MyStatLab Orientation) is due by 11:30pm Tuesday, August 30.
