1101 Home Ideology Quiz Under Construction <Back
Important note: Read this page carefully—you will lose 1/2 to 1 point (or more) for failure to meet each requirement.

Format:
First: Fill out the first page of the Word document at this link - Ideology_Quiz.docx - and use the rest of it to write the paper you will submit (see below).

Now: Go to this site: http://www.isidewith.com/political-quiz and answer the displayed questions. If you are unsure about a question, click on the "Learn More" button at the end of each question. Also, for each question, note that you can choose "Other stances" if the given choices do not reflect your thoughts. For each question, you should also select how important the issue is to you, using the scale from least to most to the left of the question. At the bottom, do not answer the "Trending" or "Local" issues questions. Finally, click on "Show My Results" at the bottom of the quiz and wait for the page to calculate your results.

Next: Use the Ideology_Quiz.docx file you began filling out earlier to answer the questions listed below (under "Procedure"). Do NOT change the document formatting, and make sure you save it as a Word file (.doc or .docx) if at all possible. Do NOT use TEXT format. If you do, you will lose credit for lack of proper formatting. Submit your file to Turnitin.com by 5pm on the first class day of one of the weeks we cover Political Socialization (chapter 4—see our schedule).

You must write more than two full pages (from the top of the second page of the document where it says "Start here:"—to at least the top of a fourth page). Again, do not change any of the document formatting (double-spaced, 1" margins, and Times Roman 12-point font. I will check these things! Spelling and grammar count! I cannot give you credit for what I do not understand. Use a standard format (introduction, body, conclusion), but be sure to specifically follow the procedures below.

Procedure:
Write your paper by answering the following questions:

  1. On the results page, scroll to the bottom where it says, "Ideologies" In what section are you (Libertarian, Left Wing [liberal], Centrist, Right Wing [conservative], Authoritarian)?

  2. Did your score fall on the left (liberal) or the right (conservative) side of the chart—or was it near the middle (moderate/centrist)? How does this compare to the self-identification answer you gave before you took the quiz?

  3. Did your score fall on the top (negative view of government/libertarian) or the bottom (positive view of government/authoritarian)—or was it near the middle (moderate/centrist)? How does this compare to your self-identification answer?

  4. According to a 2017 Gallup Poll, 26 percent of the public identify themselves liberal, 35 percent as moderate/centrist, and 35 percent as conservative. How do your quiz results compare to the Gallup Poll? Do your results put you with the Gallup Polls' larger groups of moderate/centrists or conservatives, or with their smaller group of liberals? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?

  5. Finally, a frequent criticism of some surveys is that they are too short to be accurate. We can test this by taking a longer version of the quiz. At the bottom of each area, you have the opportunity to answer more questions. Answer as many additional questions as you can and submit your new results. How did you score this time? Are the results similar to your original results? Overall, what have you learned about yourself from this assignment?
