A poll released Sunday by the Datafolha polling institute showed that support for Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff increased to a record level, although her predecessor and mentor is favored as the next presidential candidate.

According to the survey, 64% of respondents classified Rousseff's administration as 'excellent or good,' compared with 59% in the previous poll published in January. Rousseff's approval rating is above those of the person from whom she took over, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during the first years of his administration.

Asked who they would prefer to see as the next presidential candidate for the ruling Workers' Party in the 2014 election, 57% said they favored Lula against 32% for the incumbent.

"President Dilma has seen her popularity curve increasing and she could reduce that disadvantage with regards to Liula if she maintains this trajectory," said Mauro Paulino, director of Datafolha.

The approval rate for Rousseff increased as Brazilians are more optimistic about the economy, despite the slowdown last year due to the European crisis, and also with the decline in inflation, Datafolha said.

Unemployment peaked at 7.3% on a 12-month basis last September, but has since declined quickly, and ended March at 5.2%.

Meanwhile, while a 14% increase in the minimum salary is likely to have helped push up Rousseff's support among poorest Brazilians, the country's rich have also take a shine to Rousseff since the last poll. Among the richest 4% of Brazilians, Rousseff's approval surged to 70%, from 53%.

Datafolha interviewed 2,588 voting-age Brazilians nationwide on April 18 and 19. The poll's margin of error is two percentage points.
