STELLAR & GALACTIC ASTRONOMY
COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
(3
hours) The study of the sun and stars, their physical properties and evolution,
interstellar matter, star clusters, our galaxy and other galaxies, the origin
and evolution of the universe. Slides, films, classroom demonstrations and
planetarium shows are used throughout to aid in classroom discussions. Three
lecture-discussions per week.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will develop a basic understanding of the following content areas.

The nature of light & matter, a short history of the development of quantum mechanics
-
Measuring properties of stars, modeling the interiors of stars, and the Sun as a star
-
The life cycles of stars (stellar evolution)
-
The Milky Way (our galaxy), normal galaxies & galaxy systems, and active galactic nuclei

METHOD
OF EVALUATION:
Test Average: 64%
(Test dates: see calendar below)
Final Exam: 16%
Participation: 20%
(~15 activities/quizzes - 8 points each)
COURSE
GRADING:

Four exams will be given throughout the semester (see calendar below). The exam average will account for 64% of the final grade.

A non-cumulative final exam will be given on the date of the Final Exam and will account for 16% of the final grade.

There will be ~15 activities/quizzes (8 points each) that will be given throughout the semester, approximately once each week. The point total will account for 20% of the final grade.
Make-up exams will ONLY be given for a VALID excuse.
Students must notify
the professor by e-mail prior to the exam.

90 to 100; B = 80 to 89; C = 70 to 79; D = 60 to 69; F < 60
ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken by sign-in roll most class days. A student can be administratively withdrawn for missing 10% of the class meetings.

Penalty for cheating will be a grade of F for the class. Lesser penalties may be applied at the discretion of the professor.
Class Evaluations: Class evaluations at NGCSU are now conducted on-line through Banner. Evaluation of the class is considered a component of the course and students will not be permitted to access their course grade until the evaluation has been completed. The evaluations will be accessible beginning one week prior to Final Exam week.
