Jovian Planet Images

Jupiter

Jupiter (imaged by Cassini):

Jupiter's belts and zones (true color Cassini image - left, spectral band enhanced - right):

Jupiter's wind bands (southern hemisphere):

Judging from the motion shown in this movie of the belts and zones, this image shows the wind patterns in the atmosphere of Jupiter.  The winds from the high pressure zones (light bands) are being diverted to the "right" of their direction of motion in the northern hemisphere and to the "left" in the southern hemisphere.  Click here for more info. on the coriolis effect and the wind patterns of Jupiter.

The Great Red Spot:

Great Red Spot "The Movie":

Note that the GRS rotates counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere, indicating that it is a high pressure storm, not a low pressure storm; also note that the GIF movie of the wind bands to the west of the GRS are not phased with the GIF movie of the wind bands near the GRS, but by placing them side by side it's possible to get a good impression of the overall motion in the belts and zones of Jupiter
