Working in Harmony is a
FREE textbook designed to be used in the first two years of college-level
music theory. Spanning fundamentals through part writing and analysis of
20th-century music, the text may be useful in high school, AP, fundamentals
or other music courses. The PDF format allows intricate formatting of musical
notation and graphics with links to audio, video, and other online resources.

Gabriel Fankhauser joined
the faculty at the University of North Georgia in 2014, after teaching and
coordinating music theory and aural skills at Appalachian State University in
Boone, NC for many years. He regularly presents research at national and
international conferences. In addition to a published textbook on form and
analysis, he has published articles in academic journals, including Music
Analysis, Music Theory Online, Journal of Music Theory
Pedagogy, and Intégral. In
2020, he was honored to receive the UNG Teaching Excellence Award. In 2025,
he received the Outstanding Publication Award from the Society for Music
Theory (SMT) for his article, “Displaced Cadential Six-Four Chords.” |
