COURSE DESCRIPTION

BUSA 2201 is a required course in Area F of the Business Administration Core Program and is a required course in several career programs.  BUSA 2201 is an introductory course including a study of basic computer concepts, management information systems, data and file processing, systems analysis, the hardware and software available for meeting information systems needs, computer privacy and security, and the various types of information systems. Students will gain extensive hands-on microcomputer experience applying spreadsheet, database management, and word processing software to solve information problems. Students may not receive credit for BUSA 2201 and CSCI 1250. This course replaces GSC’s CISM 2201.No prior computer experience is assumed, but since this is a college-level course, it may require a good deal of time for those particularly unfamiliar with computers.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.

To present a survey of microcomputer concepts, including information systems terminology.

2.

To integrate basic information systems, word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, and database software into one logical business-based educational experience.

3.

To provide students with the skills needed to utilize the present computer technology and to adapt those skills as the technology advances.

Note: Weekly learning objectives that are measurable and consistent with the course-level objectives above may be viewed at https://classes.ung.edu/L/lyman.p/2201/CourseInfo/BUSA2201CourseObjectives_byweek.pdf or opened from the Content tab in eLearning under the Course Information topic.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION

Course Policies:

1.

Attendance/Participation

·        Online students are not required to attend classes on campus EXCEPT to take the Final Exam.  You MUST take the Final Exam.  It is a REQUIREMENT of all online courses at UNG to have a proctored activity worth a minimum of 10% of the course grade.  Your BUSA 2201 Final Exam is that proctored activity.  The Final Exam will NOT be open-book.  You must bring your ID to the Final Exam; your ID will be checked against the roll.  More information about the Final Exam is described in 7D below.

·        BUSA 2201 is an activities-based course; students are required to fully participate in all projects, modules and exams.

·        All work submitted for this course will be completed without outside support or resources unless specifically allowed by the instructor.  Work submitted must be completed by the enrolled student alone in order to receive credit.

2.

Course Withdrawal Policy

·        Students withdrawing from the class prior to the midpoint date will receive a grade of "W".  Students withdrawing from the class after the midpoint date will receive a grade of "WF".  It is the student's responsibility to properly withdraw from a course.

·        To drop a course or to withdraw from all courses, a student should click on the "Course Add, Drop, or Withdrawal" link on Banner Web.  The link is one of the options under the Registration section.
Note: When Learning Support (LS) students wish to withdraw from an LS course using Banner, they should consult with the LS department coordinator/advisor (e.g. Dede de Laughter) because withdrawing from an LS course "may" require withdrawing from all of the student's courses.  It's always best as a general rule to talk with an LS advisor before withdrawing from an LS course.

3.

No-Show Policy

Online Students must log into their eLearning courses prior to the end of the DROP/ADD deadline to confirm their attendance.  If you fail to log into the course prior to the DROP/ADD deadline, I will report you as a “No-Show,” and I will restrict your access to eLearning until you contact me via email.

4.

Technology Requirements

·        Hardware Requirements – You must have continuous access to a reliable computer with high-speed Internet access (Broadband/DSL). Students who work at home are responsible for their own Internet connection and installation of software.  No excuses will be accepted for not meeting exam or assignment deadlines due to home computer hardware or software problems and/or Internet connection problems.

·        Software Requirements -- This class requires the use of Windows 7 Operating System, MS Office 2013 and MS Expression.  Assignment instructions are written for Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2013, and MS Expression, the software available on the UNG network.  ALL MS Office files submitted must have Microsoft Office 2013 extensions.  For example: Word=.docx, Excel=.xlsx, PowerPoint=.pptx, and Access=.accdb.

·        The first project is written exclusively for the MS Windows 7 operating system software.

·        All software and hardware requirements for this course are available in the UNG computer labs at Oakwood, UC400, Dahlonega or Oconee.  You might also have to use the campus computer labs if you have off-campus computer issues or failures.

·        The UNG IT department has modified the required software installed on UNG computers.  If you have the necessary hardware outlined above, and you are working from home, you should install the UNG Virtual Lab software to gain access at home to UNG software and your personal files (see next bullet).  All lab projects should be completed using either UNG campus computers or via your home computer using the UNG Virtual Lab.

·        The UNG Virtual Lab allows you to access a computer in the UNG Virtual Lab using your home computer and an Internet connection.  Once you install the Virtual Lab software on your home computer, you will be able to run any application from the UNG Menu (including Microsoft Office 2013, MS Expression, and Adobe Acrobat).  You should also be able to save your documents to your UNG network home folder.

a)     You can access the UNG’s Virtual Lab at:  https://my.ung.edu/departments/information-technology/Pages/Virtual-Lab.aspx.  I also created a link on the eLearning homepage to access the Virtual Lab startup webpage instructions.

b)     The links you will need are on the right side of the web page in (a) above.

o   The Virtual Lab is available for Windows and for Mac users.  The tutorial will tell you explicitly how to install the Virtual Lab software and how to access UNG’s Virtual Lab once the software is installed.

o   Depending on your computer's settings, there are sometimes little glitches that can only be resolved with the help of Lance Hundt, the Virtual Lab coordinator at lhundt@ung.edu.)

o   If you are using a Mac, you should install the Virtual Lab software several days before the first assignment is due.

o   Virtual Lab install instructions may be found at https://my.ung.edu/departments/information-technology/Pages/Virtual-Lab.aspx.

5.

Deadline Policy:

ASSIGNMENTS (Project, Modules, Exams) NOT TURNED IN ON TIME WILL RECEIVE A ZERO.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  There are no makeups.  Technology failure or lack of a textbook are not an acceptable excuses for failure to submit an assignment on time.  Don’t procrastinate!  Don’t wait until the last minute to begin an assignment or start an exam or Module.  All projects, modules and exams must be completed and uploaded to eLearning according to the Assignment Sheet by 1:00pm every Thursday afternoon.

6.

Assignment Sheet:

All graded work has due dates listed on the Assignment Sheet at the end of this syllabus.  You should use the Assignment Sheet to make sure you submit all course work ON TIME.

I reserve the right to consider an individual's course performance when assigning a final grade.

A.     EXAMS
Exams must be taken by the scheduled times according to the Assignment Sheet at the end of this syllabus.  Failure to take an exam will result in a zero for that exam.  No excuses are accepted for failure to take an exam.

Exams (except for the Final Exam) will become available a week prior to each exam deadline.  All exams (except for the Final Exam) will have a deadline of Thursday at 1:00pm.  Refer to your Assignment Sheet to determine when a specific exam is due.

I provided a Study Sheet for each exam, including the Final Exam.  These Study Sheets may be accessed on the left-hand navigation section of the eLearning homepage.  Click on the Study Sheet link OR at the following URL: http://faculty.ung.edu/plyman/.  The actual links to the Study Sheets are on the shared class files which should ensure that you will always have access to study materials for each exam if for some reason eLearning becomes inaccessible.

You should answer the Study Sheet questions for each exam BEFORE you attempt to take an exam.  If you complete each Study Sheet and have it available before you begin taking an exam, you will not have any trouble completing the exam well within the time allotted.

Exams will be taken online from a computer that can reliably access eLearning.  (Internet Explorer works the best with eLearning.)  Click on the “Exams” link on the left-hand navigation section of the homepage of eLearning to access the exams available.  Alternatively, you can click on the "Content" link on the top navigation bar and scroll down to "Exams" which should list the available exams directly below.  Note:  Initially, you will only see Chapter 1's exam, but it will not be available to take until January 15 per the Assignment Sheet.  Each week a new exam will be added.

The exams (not including the final exam) are open-book.  Each exam will have 25 multiple choice questions worth two points each.  Each exam will cover a chapter from the Discovering Computers Enhanced book as indicated on the Assignment Sheet.

·        There are 11 chapter exams covering Chapters 1-11 (and a comprehensive Final Exam discussed below).

·        Questions will be delivered one at a time.

·        You will have one chance to answer each question.  You may NOT revisit a question.

·        You will have 25 minutes to complete each chapter exam (not including the final), so keep your eye on the ticking clock once you start the exam.  Once the 25 minutes are up, you will not be able to answer any more questions.  If the time for an exam expires before you are able to click the “Go To Submit Quiz" button, email me, and I will force submission for the questions you were able to complete.  You should click the Save button BEFORE you click the Next Page button.

·        Be sure to click the “Go To Submit Quiz” button after you complete your exam.  Just to be safe, click the Save All Responses button before you submit your quiz.

·        Click the Submit Quiz button in the Quiz Submission Confirmation window to submit your quiz.

Let me know immediately if you cannot view your grade in the eLearning gradebook after you submit an exam.  You have one week after an exam's due date to email me if you have any questions about your score for that exam.  Your first Exam is due by 1:00pm on January 22 per the assignment sheet.

Technology happens, so don't wait until the last minute to take an exam.

B.     MODULES
Each Module Quiz consists of multiple choice questions covering your class projects.  Answers to the modules can be found in the Microsoft Office 2013 lab book (and MS Expression 3 for Module 6's questions).

BEFORE you take a Module Quiz, click on the Module Printouts link on the left-hand navigation section of the eLearning homepage and print out the questions for that module.  (Alternatively, you can click on the "Content" link on the top navigation bar and scroll down to "Module Printouts.")  Don’t assume you know the correct answers from experience.  Look up the answers to each question in the appropriate lab book and mark the answer on the Module printout.

Once you have completed all the questions on the printout, go to the Module Quizzes link on the left-hand navigation section of the eLearning homepage and upload your answers to the appropriate Module Quiz.  (It’s like entering your answers onto a scan tron.)

Each Module Quiz question will be ordered like the Module Printouts, so all you have to do is click on the answer you chose on the printout.

·        All questions will be displayed.

·        You will have 20 minutes to upload your answers, so keep your eye on the clock.  Save each answer to each question as you progress.

·        Be sure to click the “Go To Submit Quiz” button after you complete your exam.  Just to be safe, click the Save All Responses button before you submit your quiz.

·        Click the Submit Quiz button in the Quiz Submission Confirmation window to submit your quiz.

·        Let me know immediately if you cannot view your grade in the eLearning gradebook after you submit an exam.

·        It is YOUR responsibility to contact me ASAP if you have a problem submitting your Module Quiz.

·        You have one week after a Module Quiz's due date to email me if you have any questions about your score for that module.

Each Module Quiz will have 15 questions from each chapter covered in a particular module.

Module Quizzes must be taken by the scheduled times according to the Assignment Sheet at the end of this syllabus.  Failure to take a Module Quiz will result in a zero for that quiz.  No excuses are accepted for failure to take a quiz.  The due dates are available all semester, so plan ahead and don't wait until the last minute.

As in the Exams section above, you can print out the Module Printout questions from the eLearning homepage or from the following link:  http://faculty.ung.edu/plyman/.

C.    PROJECTS
The projects are your "hands on" computer assignments. The projects (except for the Windows 7 project) are in the Microsoft Office 2013 lab book and in the Microsoft Expression 3 lab book.  My supplemental instructions for each project may be accessed from the eLearning homepage under the Projects link on the left-hand navigation section OR at the following shared class files link http://faculty.ung.edu/plyman/.

You MUST have your MS Office 2013 lab book to complete projects 2-11 and your MS Expression lab book to complete projects 12-14.  I modified some of the instructions for each project.  DO NOT START ANY OF THE PROJECTS UNTIL YOU PRINT OUT MY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THAT PROJECT.  I completely replaced the Windows 7 project in your lab book with a project I wrote.  Failure to adhere to the project modifications will result in reduced points given for that project.

Projects must be submitted to the dropbox in eLearning by the scheduled times according to the Assignment Sheet at the end of this syllabus.  You can access the dropbox with the "Dropbox" icon link on the top navigation bar, or you can access the dropbox on the left-hand navigation section of the eLearning homepage (scroll down to the Dropbox link).  Failure to submit a project on time will result in a zero for that project.  No excuses are accepted for failure to submit a project on time.  The due dates are available all semester, so plan ahead and don't wait until the last minute.  The MS Expression projects will also be hyperlinked to a homepage on the UNG server.  Successful hyperlinks will be part of those projects' scores.

Note: The publisher has provided free access to student labs to increase your comfort with the course material and technology.  These publisher labs are not required, but they offer extra practice and may be helpful as you work through each project's new material.  The free labs offer presentations of chapter material, interactive exercises that reinforce the videos, and quizzes that will provide practice and feedback over the material in each project chapter.  To access the free interactive materials

1.     Go to the publisher's Website at http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/search/9781285166025

2.     Click on the Free Materials tab.

3.     Click the Access now button.

4.     Select the chapter you wish to access.

As mentioned under Course Policies above, work submitted must be completed by the enrolled student alone in order to receive credit.

Be sure to BUY YOUR MS EXPRESSION BOOK BEFORE the semester midpoint.  The campus bookstore sends back unpurchased books at the midpoint.  Failure to purchase your textbook in a timely fashion will mean that you might not be able to complete the Expression portion of your projects which will result in a zero for the three chapters in those assignments.

D.    FINAL EXAM
The Final Exam is comprehensive over the 11 chapter exams taken during the semester.  The Final Exam will have 100 multiple choice questions from the Discovering Computers Enhanced textbook.  There is a Final Exam Study Sheet available under the Study Sheets link on eLearning.  The Final Exam will be NOT be open-book, and you will not be permitted any notes.  The exam should take about an hour.

The Final Exam date and time are shown on the Assignment Sheet AND at the beginning of this syllabus.

It is a REQUIREMENT of all online courses at UNG to have a proctored activity worth a minimum of 10% of the course grade.  Your BUSA 2201 FINAL EXAM is that proctored activity.  YOU MUST TAKE THE FINAL EXAM.

There are 3 options available to take the BUSA 2201 Final Exam.

Option 1: Face-to-face with me on the Oconee campus (free)

Option 2: Proctor U (for a fee)

Option 3: An authorized “Approved Testing Locations in Georgia” (for a fee)

See below for details on your options.  I will email you with the deadline for notifying me which option you plan to adopt when I receive notice from the college about the date and time of the Final Exam.

OPTION 1  (no fee - best option)

The Final Exam will be administered face-to-face on the computer on the Oconee campus.

·        The Final Exam date/location/time will be shown on the Assignment Sheet, the eLearning homepage AND at the beginning of the syllabus as soon as I know that information.

·        You must bring a UNG picture ID to the Final Exam which I will check against my roll.

·        It takes a minimum of 1 ľ hour to 2 hours to get to Oconee from Dahlonega.  It would be better to schedule 2 ˝ hours, just to be safe.

OPTION 2:  (ProctorU-for a fee)

Contact Proctor U, a webcam proctoring service.  You will need to register to take your Final Exam no less than 72 hours prior to the exam. If less than 72 hours it will cost more.

·        You will need to have a UNG photo ID as mentioned above.

·        You will be given 1 hour to take the exam which will be scheduled to coincide with the face-to-face exam, but you should login to Proctor U at least 20 minutes before the Final Exam is scheduled to begin to get set up.

·        For more information about the ProctorU option see:

o   ProctorU Examinee Pay Chart

o   ProctorU FAQs

o   ProcturU Privacy FAQs

o   ProctorU Student Handout

OPTION 3: (Approved Testing Locations in Georgia)

Contact an authorized “Approved Testing Location” on this list https://my.ung.edu/departments/distance-education/Pages/Approved-Proctoring-Locations.aspx no less than 15 days prior to the Final Exam to make an appointment to take the exam there.

·        NOTE: You cannot use any of the UNG testing sites for a proctored test.

·        You will need to bring a UNG photo ID as mentioned above.

·        You will be given 1 hour to take the Final Exam which will be scheduled to coincide with the face-to-face exam.

Note: Proctor U is generally the cheapest option if you cannot drive to the Oconee campus.  Your exam will still be closed notes and books, and the webcam proctoring service will ensure you adhere to these requirements.

If you decide to take the Final Exam with a fee-based proctor service, you will not be given access to the Final Exam unless I am able to confirm the scheduling with the proctoring service.

If for some reason, you do not meet one of these options for taking the FINAL EXAM, you will not receive a grade for the Final Exam.

8.

Save your work often!  Outages and error messages are hopefully infrequent, but they do happen.  Unsaved work is lost!  It also would be a good idea to back up your work.
