TEXT AND OTHER MATERIALS

NOTE: You will not need a course key.

The materials for this course are part of UNG’s First Day Inclusive Access Program. You have the option to “Opt-Out,” but it is not recommended as Inclusive Access is the most cost effective purchasing option. Alternatively, see also options for purchasing an access code below.

Text: Financial and Managerial Accounting eText Cengage (CNOW) Access Code; Warren, Jones, and Tayler; 16th edition; South-Western Cengage Learning, 2022.

Options:

Inclusive Access:

With this option, your UNG student account has already been charged because it is assumed that you wish to adopt the Inclusive Access option. To remove the charge (NOT RECOMMENDED unless you already have a Cengage Unlimited subscription), click on the Opt-Out of Inclusive Access (not recommended) link under Cengage Resources in D2L.

Purchase – goes with “Opt-Out” (not recommended):

If you wish to opt out of inclusive access, you can purchase the access code at the UNG bookstore, UNG bookstore website, or Cengage.com. It is not recommended to purchase anywhere else as Cengage cannot assist with invalid access codes purchased from other sources. Beware of sites that are selling discounted codes. These sources are likely unauthorized sellers who have acquired access codes illegally, and transactions with such sources may pose a risk to your personal information.

FYI If you want a looseleaf book, you can purchase it through the bookstore for ~$35 if you are part of the Inclusive Access program.

If you opt out of Inclusive Access, you can still access CNOWv2 through D2L. You’ll just see a prompt to pay or enter an access code after the drop/add period has ended.

Ø  If you adopt the purchase option, before applying a purchased Access code, you must FIRST register for Cengage through eLearning (D2L)!

Ø  If you do not register for the course properly, your Cengage assignments will not sync to the eLearning gradebook.

Ø  If you experience difficulties during registration, contact Cengage Customer Support for assistance 800-354-9706 or https://support.cengage.com.

ACCT 2101 is a lower-division course designed to prepare students for four-year business programs. Students will learn to:

1.

Demonstrate an understanding of the role of financial accounting in business, while learning about the various roles in the accounting profession.

2.

Define and apply accounting terminology concepts and principles to analyze, record, summarize, and report business transactions related to financing and operating a business.

3.

Note: Chapter learning objectives that are measurable and consistent with the course-level objectives above may be viewed at http://faculty.ung.edu/plyman/2101/CourseInformation/2101_LearningObjectives_16e.pdf or opened from the Content tab in eLearning under the Course Information topic.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION

Course Policies:

1.

Attendance/Participation

This is a face-to-face split session course. All of the class sessions are delivered face-to-face with Cengage assignments and Cengage exams delivered online via CengageNow (CNOW). Note: The Midterm Exam and the Final Exam will be taken with D2L using your laptop in class during regularly scheduled class times.

ALL students must complete the Mandatory Attendance Quiz in D2L 24 hours after the end of the drop/add period–submission deadline: (11:00 p.m. January 14, Wednesday, 11:00pm). Students who do not complete the Mandatory Attendance Quiz will be reported as absent during roll verification and will be withdrawn from the course (receiving a W).

In addition to completing the Mandatory Attendance Quiz by 11:00pm on January 14, students MUST attend class in person at least once during the Attendance Verification period or the student will be reported as absent and will be administratively withdrawn (not dropped) from the course (receiving a W).

Attendance is mandatory unless administratively excused by UNG. Students missing MORE than 20 percent of classes (4 classes) BEFORE the withdrawal date will be administratively withdrawn at the instructor's discretion. Students exceeding allotted absences AFTER the withdrawal date will be penalized 8 points per absence. For example, if you have four unexcused absences before OR after the withdrawal date cumulatively, and you miss two additional classes after the withdrawal date, 16 points (8 points x 2 missed classes) will be deducted from your total points earned for the semester.

Students who wish to voluntarily withdraw must do so by the midpoint of the term to avoid academic penalty. It is the student’s responsibility (not the faculty member’s) to arrange for a voluntary withdrawal from either a course or from the school.

You MUST take the Midterm Exam AND the Final Exam in class face-to-face in eLearning (D2L) via the Respondus Lockdown Browser. THERE IS NO MAKE-UP OPTION unless you have been excused by UNG for documented health reasons. You will receive a ZERO if you miss the Midterm or Final exams. No exceptions.

Note: If you have been administratively excused by UNG for documented health reasons, contact me ASAP. You will be expected to complete all missed assignments on the day you are administratively released to return to class (shown as “Student returns on:” per the excuse). You will receive a zero for any assignments missed during the excused period that are not completed on the “Student returns on:” day.

·        To report a non-covid related absence for illness, hospitalization ,etc.,
see https://ung.edu/dean-of-students/excused-absence-notification.php and click on the Excused Absence Notification button. You will need documentation.

ACCT 2101 is an activities-based course; students are required to fully participate in ALL assignments.

If a student has not completed at least 60% of all assignments due by the withdrawal date, the student may be administratively withdrawn from the class.

All work submitted (assignments and exams, D2L midterm and final exam) must be completed by the enrolled student alone.

Students may use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to support their studying. However, AI-generated information can contain errors or inaccuracies, so always verify the results before relying on them.

2.

Course Withdrawal Policy

Students withdrawing from the class prior to the midpoint date will receive a grade of "W".  Students withdrawing from the class after the midpoint date will receive a grade of "WF". It is the student's responsibility to properly withdraw from a course.

To drop a course during drop/add or to withdraw from courses, a student should click on the "Course Add, Drop, or Withdrawal" link on Banner Web. The link is one of the options in Banner under the Nighthawk Course Scheduler section. For more detailed directions on how to withdraw from a course, see https://ung.edu/registrar/withdrawal-information.php (scroll down)

Note: When Learning Support (LS) AKA Student Accessibility Services (SAS) students wish to withdraw from an LS course using Banner, they should consult with the LS department coordinator/advisor.

3.

No-Show Policy

As mentioned above in the Attendance/Participation section, this course has a Mandatory Attendance Quiz and required face-to-face attendance during the roll verification period.

o   The Mandatory Attendance Quiz will be available in D2L (see the Quizzes link on the top nav bar) on Friday, January 9 when students are granted early access to D2L. The quiz MUST be completed by Wednesday, January 14 at 11:00pm or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course with a W.

o   You must attend at least one class face-to-face during the roll verification period or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course with a W.

4.

Technology Requirements:

You must have continuous access to a RELIABLE computer with high-speed Internet access (Broadband/DSL). Students who complete their Cengage Assignments and Cengage exams at home are responsible for their own Internet connection. No excuses will be accepted for not meeting exam or assignment deadlines due to home computer hardware or software problems and/or Internet connection problems. You should develop a backup plan and test it in case your hardware, software, or Internet connection stops working.

Cengage does NOT support access to their systems with a cellular connection or with a cellphone or tablet device. It may work, but they do NOT support it. They recommend a stable Wi-Fi connection with a laptop or desktop computer.

Since your Midterm and Final exams will be administered in class with a laptop, you MUST have a reliable laptop with high-speed Internet access to take both exams in class.

You should have received the following hardware email:

It is critical all MCCB students have access to a laptop computer since some required software may not work on cell phones, tablets or Chromebooks. If you are purchasing a computer, the recommended and minimum computer requirements are located on the UNG website at this link: https://ung.edu/information-technology/FAQ.php Contact the financial aid office to find out if your aid package or scholarship may be used to make this purchase. The Department of Information Technology has a limited number of laptops students may check out. Contact IT for more information.

Chrome browsers work best with eLearning. Be sure to enable popups in your browser.

5.

Deadline Policy:

ASSIGNMENTS (CNOW chapter assignments and all exams, including the D2L Midterm Exam and the Final Exam) NOT SUBMITTED ON TIME WILL RECEIVE A ZERO. Unless you have been excused by UNG for documented health reasons, there are no exceptions to this rule. There are no makeups. Technology failure or lack of a textbook are not acceptable excuses for failure to submit an exam or CNOW chapter assignment on time. Don’t procrastinate! Don’t wait until the last minute to begin an assignment or start an exam.

6.

Assignment Sheet:

All graded work has due dates listed on the Assignment Sheet at the end of this syllabus. You should use the Assignment Sheet to make sure you submit all course work ON TIME. Note: There is also a repeat of the Assignment Sheet in D2L on the top NavBar (see Course Calendar link).

7.

Course Grading:

Your final grade in the course is based on your performance on CengageNOW chapter assignments, CengageNOW exams, and the D2L Midterm and Final exams.

Again, you elected to take this accelerated course first session). In order to successfully complete the course, you should expect to spend two to three hours a day on course materials.

Follow the instructions in the D2L Start Here link to complete the following course requirements:

·        All CengageNOW chapter Assignments 2&3 and CengageNOW exams are mandatory and are due at 11:00pm based on the Assignment Sheet due dates at the end of this syllabus.

·        The Midterm Exam and the Final Exam are mandatory and will be administered face-to-face with your laptop in D2L via Respondus Lockdown Browser during the regularly scheduled class time per the Assignment Sheet.

·        Every chapter (1-10,12, and 13) will have three CNOW assignments (except Chapter 7 which will not have an Assignment 3):

§  Assignment 1: Adaptive Study Plans (ASPs) are not graded. NOTE: You should spend at least 30 minutes in the ASP BEFORE you attempt to complete Assignments 2 and 3. Alternatively, you could read the eBook chapter before completing Assignments 2 and 3. I HIGHLY recommend that you complete the ASP quiz after you finish Assignments 2 and 3.

§  Assignment 2: Tasks in Assignment 2 are based on your eText/textbook end of chapter Brief Exercises (usually 4 to 7 questions). Each Assignment 2 is worth 20 points. Three attempts are allowed for each Chapter Assignment 2.

§  Assignment 3: Tasks in Assignment 3 are based on your eText/textbook end of chapter Exercises and Problems. Each Assignment 3 is worth 30 points. Two attempts are allowed for each Chapter Assignment 3.

§  You may work ahead on any CengageNOW chapter assignment. In fact, it’s a great idea to work ahead.

§  It is YOUR responsibility to check your assignment grades in the D2L gradebook (Grades) link BEFORE the due date. (Give D2L a few minutes to sync with the Cengage gradebook.)

§  You have one week after an assignment’s due date to email me if you have any questions about your performance or score for that assignment.

§  Unless you have been excused by UNG for documented health reasons, THERE IS NO MAKE-UP OPTION for any Cengage assignment. You will receive a ZERO for any assignment not completed by the due date/time. No exceptions.

·        In addition to CengageNOW activities, supplementary files and videos are available by chapter in D2L under Chapter Materials Supplemental. These materials include chapter class notes, PowerPoints, and chapter videos (in some chapters) from face-to-face classes. The materials are not required; they are available to supplement your learning opportunities during the semester.

·        Cengage Exams 1-6 (not including the Midterm or Final exams) cover two chapters and are given every other chapter (e.g. Exam 1-Chapters 1&2, Exam 2-Chapters 3&4). Exams 1-6 (not including the Midterm or Final exams) will be administered from the Cengage student dashboard.

§  Each CengageNOW exam (not including the Midterm or Final exams) is worth 65 points.

§  Students will have 60 minutes to complete each exam. Once you start the exam, you must finish the exam.

§  Cengage exams will be available 24 hours before the due date.

§  Only one attempt is allowed for each exam.

§  Cengage exams will consist of multiple choice questions and problems. See Exam Study Sheets in D2L for more exam content information.

§  Cengage exams will not be proctored, but it is expected that exams will be completed by the enrolled student alone.

§  Cengage exams will be open book, open notes. Even though students will have access to the book and notes for Cengage Exams, it is best to study as though you were in a closed book exam. With only have 60 minutes to complete an exam, there will not be much time to look up answers.

§  Again, it is YOUR responsibility to check your assignment and exam grades in the D2L gradebook (Grades) BEFORE the due date.

§  You have one week after an exam's due date to contact/email me if you have any questions about your performance or score for that exam.

§  Unless you have been excused by UNG for documented health reasons, THERE IS NO MAKE-UP OPTION for any Cengage exam. You will receive a ZERO for any Cengage exam not completed by the due date/time. No exceptions.

·        The Midterm Exam and the Final Exam are closed book/closed notes exams.

§  Everyone must take the Midterm Exam and the Final Exam face-to-face in class with your laptop using D2L via the Respondus Lockdown Browser. Additional information on how to use Respondus Lockdown Browser is available in D2L under Course Information.

§  Your laptop MUST have a RELIABLE Internet connection and a battery that will last two hours.

§  Bring a 4-function calculator to the Midterm and Final Exams. Graphing calculators with big screens are not permitted. FYI You may check out a 4-function calculator with your UNG student ID from the Tutoring Center (SRC 583).

§  You will be given 90 minutes to complete the Midterm Exam. The Midterm Exam is comprehensive over chapters 1-6, consists of 50 multiple choice questions, and is worth 100 points. Midterm Exam questions will be delivered one at a time. You will be able to go back to a previously answered question. A Midterm Exam study sheet is available in D2L (See Exam Study Sheets under the Content Browser).

§  You will be given 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete the Final Exam. The final exam is comprehensive over chapters 1-10,12 and 13, consists of 75 multiple choice questions, and is worth 150 points. Final exam questions will be delivered one at a time. You will be able to go back to a previously answered question. A final exam study sheet is available in D2L (See Exam Study Sheets under the Content Browser).

§  The ACCT 2101 Midterm and Final exams are closed book/closed notes. With Respondus Lockdown Browser, you will NOT be able to access other websites or documents on the computer you are using to take the D2L ACCT 2101 Midterm or Final exams.

§  You have one week after an exam's due date to contact/email me if you have any questions about your performance or score for that exam.

§  There is a Respondus Practice Quiz for the Midterm or Final exams available in D2L under Quizzes. You should use this quiz to test your equipment to ensure your setup works with Respondus Lockdown Browser. Note: Chromebook is in beta testing to interface with Respondus. Please contact me if you need to use Chromebook to take the Midterm or Final exams.

§  Unless you have been excused by UNG for documented health reasons, THERE IS NO MAKE-UP OPTION for the Midterm or Final exams. You will receive a ZERO for the Midterm or Final exams if you miss them. No exceptions.

·        There is one Excel-based Accounting Cycle Project worth 5 points (see D2L Assignments Dropbox). You have one week after the Excel-based assignment’s due date to contact/email me if you have any questions about your performance or score for that assignment.

Grades will be based on the following:
