Welcome to my web page here at the University of North Georgia. Whether you are one of my current students, or are considering a major in criminal justice at UNG, I hope the information provided here will be of some assistance. I have arranged the page to provide some of my personal history as well as several study aids for students enrolled in my classes.

I came to North Georgia in 1980, drawn by the small college atmosphere and the natural beauty of the region. My wife, Mary, and I enjoy hiking and travel. The picture at the top of the page was taken at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park.  We have hiked extensively throughout the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area and hope to return there as soon as possible. We have also traveled abroad on several occasions, including tours of Paris and the Loire Valley, looking up long lost family members in Ireland, extensive relaxation in Mexico, a visit to the Soviet Union before the breakup, an intensive stay in the wonderful city of Rome and several enlightening trips to Istanbul, Turkey.

We've got some great pics of the places we've been.  Click below and check them out.  I'll be adding more as time permits.

.

Professionally, I obtained a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University in Boston., a M.A. in Criminology from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. To help round things out I also attended law school at Georgia State University for one very long year. My educational development has been supplemented by occupational experiences in both state and federal correctional institutions.

Listed below you will find detailed information on my courses at UNG. I will be adding more information for each course as time permits. If you have a specific question regarding any of my courses or the criminal justice program please feel free to contact me.

I am retired from UNG as of 6/1/14.  My university email is still active if you need to contact me:  leo.downing@ung.edu
