The Seyfert type spiral galaxy NGC 7742 (left) shows an inner ring of star
formation with flocculent spiral structure made up of small spiral segments
but no real traceable spiral arms. Outside this ring, a slightly
more "grand-design" spiral structure is visible.
The normal spiral galaxy NGC 4062 (right) is also classified a having flocculent
spiral structure, but also shows some grand-design structure.
The normal spiral galaxy NGC 4603 (left) exhibits definite "grand-design"
spiral structure with two major spiral arms visible.
The other normal spiral galaxy NGC 5248 (right) is also a good example
of grand-design spiral structure.
