THE DR. RAY C. RENSI HISTORY AWARD


The Dr. Ray C. Rensi History Award is supported by:

                   Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice
     ⋅ Rensi Family
     ⋅ Barry Friedman

     Established in 2002 to honor Dr. Ray C. Rensi on his retirement from the faculty of North Georgia College & State University, the award is presented to the student at Lumpkin County High School who writes the best paper on the subject of the history of Lumpkin County or the Appalachian region.

     Dr. Rensi served NGCSU as professor of history, head of the Department of Social Sciences, and head of the Department of History and Sociology.

     These students have been the recipients of the award.

     The plaque, on permanent display at Lumpkin County High School, quotes Cicero:

     "History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time:  it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity."

     The Georgia General Assembly adopted this resolution about the Lumpkin County Historical Society and the Dr. Ray C. Rensi Award:

Lines A RESOLUTION
1 Commending the Lumpkin County Historical Society, Inc.; and for other purposes.
2-3  WHEREAS, the purpose of the Lumpkin County Historical Society, Inc., is to "learn from
the past and preserve for the future"; and
4-7  WHEREAS, the society sponsors programs featuring the history and heritage of Dahlonega,
Lumpkin County, and Northeast Georgia, holds an awards program recognizing notable
events or activities related to Lumpkin County´s history, and sponsors essay contests for 8th
grade students at Lumpkin County Middle School to foster interest in local history; and
8-12 WHEREAS, the society has established the Ray C. Rensi Award to be presented to the
Lumpkin County High School student who writes the best research paper on a subject
relating to the history of Lumpkin County or the southern Appalachian mountain region and
the prized Madeleine K. Anthony Award, which is presented to a recipient who the society
believes has made the most significant historical contribution during the previous year; and
13-17 WHEREAS, the society has established a museum of local history in the 1884 Old Jail, a
building listed on the National Register of Historic Places; provides docents to open the
museum and give tours; and has reprinted The Hand Ditch of Lumpkin County, Georgia, an
archaeological study by Thomas H. Gresham, in order to make it available to those interested
in the area´s gold mining history.
18-20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
this body commends the Lumpkin County Historical Society, Inc., for its outstanding
contributions to the citizens of Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, and the State of Georgia.
21-23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Lumpkin County
